The striking firn edge of the north ridge is often considered the most beautiful ice ridge in the Alps: a combined climbing route with ice up to 50°, at the transition to the summit UIAA III. The firn part of the ridge ends at the north summit Piz Alv, and between it and the main summit lies the Berninascharte. The descent goes via the Spallagrat to the Rifugio Marco e Rosa (3609 m), the highest mountain hut in the Eastern Alps, then via the Fortezzagrat to the Bovalhütte across the Morteratsch glacier and along its lateral moraine to Morteratsch.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003ePeaks around Piz Bernina\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePiz Bernina (4048 m) is the only four-thousander of the Eastern Alps and the highest mountain in Graubünden.
