The normal ascent leads over the crevassed Pers Glacier onto the shoulder of the east ridge and along the partly exposed, steep crest to the east summit, the Piz Palü Orientale (3882 m). The ice falls at the foot of Piz Cambrena and the numerous crevasses call for careful route-finding and complete high-alpine equipment; in good conditions the route is rated WS on the SAC scale. Back at the Diavolezza, you descend to the Bernina Diavolezza stop (2082 m) of the Bernina Railway.
