In 1592 Matthias Oeder first mentioned the rock as Pastey. Caspar David Friedrich painted his picture “Rocky Landscape in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains” based on Bastei motifs. The present sandstone Bastei Bridge was built in 1850/51; it is 76.5 m long and spans the Mardertelle with seven arches. Hermann Krone took photographs on the bridge in 1853, and his series of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains marks the beginning of landscape photography in Saxony. The area around the Bastei belongs to the core zone of the Saxon Switzerland National Park.

Rocks around the Bastei

In the Bastei rocks lies the Neurathen rock castle, the largest medieval rock castle in Saxon Switzerland. At the Jahrhundertturm, a rock summit at the bridge, there are memorial plaques; from the Ferdinandstein, part of the Wehltürme, the famous view of the Bastei Bridge is possible. Add the Lilienstein (415.2 m), the only table mountain on the right bank of the Elbe and a symbol of the national park, and the Pfaffenstein (434.6 m). August von Goethe named both in 1819 when he praised the view from the Bastei.

Bastei relief: data

Data basis: high-precision LiDAR elevation data for the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, accurate to the millimeter

Relief: 3D print in PLA, a bio-based polymer made mostly from renewable raw materials

Base: solid oak plate, oiled

Sizes: 10x10, 15x15, 20x20, 25x25 and 28x28 cm

Colors: white, black, anthracite or light gray, each matte; price depends on size

Production: handmade in Bavaria, optional custom engraving

Bastei as a gift

Bastei Bridge, Neurathen rock castle, Lilienstein: a gift for hikers in Saxon Switzerland and for fans of the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, for an anniversary or as a reminder of a day on the Elbe.
